DESCRIPTION:
|
|
Hiring Range $62,561 - $75,000 Negotiable/Depends on Qualifications
Performs difficult technical work in the review of construction plans and specifications to determine compliance with applicable codes and the approval of permits for the installation of fire extinguishing and detection systems; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Chief. Supervision is exercised over Fire Inspectors.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
|
- Reviews plans for proposed construction projects to verify conformance with the codes and ordinances;
- Advises architects, engineers, contractors and the general public on fire code requirements and inspection procedures and of requirements for obtaining permits;
- Plans and assigns work to staff; evaluates performance; reviews reports and correspondence and assists on new or difficult inspection problems;
- Performs site inspections of construction projects, evaluates construction methods for conformance of fire code requirements; inspects completed projects for compliance;
- Conducts fire education and fire training for business schools, day care centers and the community;
- Manages fire prevention program-includes fire inspections to comply with inspection schedule as required by Town Ordinance;
- Manages fire education programs;
- Manage child safety seat program;
- Receives complaints regarding fire protection installations or violations of fire prevention ordinances and investigates more difficult enforcement problems;
- Ensures records and databases are maintained according to State and Town standards;
- Performs quality control inspections of work on a regular basis;
- Develops and executes fire prevention budget;
- Manages fire investigations for cause and origin;
- Completes annual required training to maintain certifications and qualifications;
- Attend various meetings as department representative;
- Submits quarterly review and analysis data;
- Performs related tasks as required.

- Serves as member and participates in local organizations including, but not limited to, Safe Kids of Wake County, Wake County Firefighters Burned Children's Fund, Greater Wake County Fire Marshal's Association;

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
|
|
Thorough knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of fire preventions, engineering, construction and protection equipment systems; thorough knowledge of the laws and ordinances of the state and Town regarding fire prevention; thorough knowledge of NFPA and other national standards as related to the construction and fire protection of various structures; ability to recognize existing and potential fire hazards in a wide variety of structures and installations; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to read and interpret blueprints, site plans and designs, and evaluate construction plans as they relate to fire protection systems and code compliance; ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; ability to evaluate and formulate objective criteria for the acceptance of proposals as they relate to the code or proposed alternate means, methods or materials of compliance.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
|
|
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in fire protection technology, fire science or construction technology and a minimum of 5 years experience as a fire inspector and in the plans review process. Completion of "Managing Effective Fire Prevention Programs" course through the National Fire Academy preferred.
Motor vehicle record check required prior to and throughout employment; must be able to meet town driving requirements at all times.
Possession of the following certifications or ability to obtain within 1 year from date of hire:
NC Life Safety Educator Level III,
NC Fire Inspector III certification
NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 & 800
Child Safety Seat Technician
Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Specialist I
NC Arson Investigator
CERT Instructor
