    RECRUITMENT NOTICE

    FIRE MARSHAL

    The Fire Marshall performs difficult protective service and intermediate administrative work in fire prevention and investigation.  Duties include: supervises fire code enforcement; plans, supervises and implements the fire prevention inspection program;

    prepares and maintains reports, records and files; reviews building plans for compliance with fire code; inspects projects during construction, notes necessary corrections and advises builder; initiates and participates in community educational programs; reviews inspection and investigation reports and correspondence; inspects commercial, industrial and institutional buildings for fire hazards and compliance; supervises and participates in fire investigations; collects evidence, questions witnesses, compiles detailed reports and testifies in court; participates with law enforcement personnel and insurance agencies in the preparation of arson case; issues permits for special events; ensures events comply with fire code; and prepares preplan drawings and evacuation plans. 

    To Compete in the Selection Process:

    Successful candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent with extensive experience in fire prevention, fire education and supervisory experience.  Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of fire prevention; fire inspections; fire hazards; fire prevention codes, practices and policies; physical layout and location of City buildings; flammable liquids, gases and hazardous chemicals; and electrical wiring systems.  Must have the ability to plan, assign and direct the work of employees; maintain records and prepare detailed technical reports; mechanical aptitude; ability to operate personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages; demonstrated leadership and communication skills; and effectively supervise others at fires and other emergencies. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid NC driver's license, a Level II NC Fire Prevention Code Official Standard Certificate, and a Level III probationary certificate is required.  Must obtain a Level III NC Fire Prevention Code Official-Standard Certificate within 24 months of appointment.  Must possess EMT Basic, Hazardous Materials Operations and Firefighter II certifications.  A valid Level III NC Fire Prevention Code Official-Standard Certificate is strongly preferred.  Must meet and maintain all department training and certification requirements for position.  Grade 23 hiring rate $18.18 per hour.
