Fire Company Officer

SALARY: $45,306.00 - $72,489.00 Annually

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK::

Performs difficult protective service work commanding a fire company; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Battalion Chief. Supervision is exercised over subordinate company personnel. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS::

Commanding a fire suppression company; supervising medical response; training personnel; participating in equipment, apparatus and station maintenance; maintaining records and files; preparing reports. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. • Supervises and directs the activities of a fire company.
• Coordinates the activities of fire suppression personnel.
• Implements and enforces departmental SOPs and policies.
• Responds to and participates in fire suppression activities during emergencies.
• Ensures all apparatus and equipment is cleaned, maintained and ready for service.
• Assists with preplanning and inspection activities.
• Maintains training records.
• Participates in station cleaning and grounds maintenance activities.
• Maintains physical fitness through exercise, jogging, weightlifting, walking, etc.
• Acts as Battalion Chief when required.
• Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
• Performs related tasks as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE::

Completion of an associate's degree or 69-credit hours of a bachelor's degree program in a relevant field, as outlined in the Jacksonville Fire & Emergency Services Promotional Handbook; additionally, successful completion of required licenses/certifications as outlined within the Jacksonville Fire & Emergency Services Promotional Handbook plus 2 years of experience as a Driver/Operator II position or equivalent.

Possession of the following certifications/licenses

• NC Class B Drivers License
• NC Firefighter
• NC Hazardous Materials Level I
• NC Emergency Medical Technician – Basic
• NC Fire Officer I
• NC Fire Officer II
• NC Fire Instructor I
• NC Fire Inspector I
• Child Passenger Safety Seat Technician

Employee must meet and maintain all department training and requirements for the position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES::

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of fire suppression; thorough knowledge of department rules and regulations; thorough knowledge of the physical lay out of the City and the location of important buildings; general knowledge of supervisory principles and practices; ability to maintain detailed records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates; mechanical aptitude; ability to operate personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages; ability to effectively supervise others at fires and other emergencies.
