The Town of Apex is actively recruiting for several full-time firefighter positions to perform responsible fire suppression, rescue, and incident response activities on an assigned shift in the Fire department.
Salary Range for this position: $43,902 - $72,438

Typical Tasks
Typical activities involve firefighting, performing emergency medical service response, facility and equipment maintenance, and participation in incident response and fire suppression training. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment and requires the employee to incorporate the necessary changes into in-service training. Ability to make effective decisions under pressure is required in all aspects of emergency response work. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incident response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision of the assigned station's Fire Officer and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of modern methods of attacking fire emergencies and of the use and maintenance of firefighting apparatus and equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of incident response including response to hazardous materials spills and emergency medical service calls.
- Considerable knowledge of emergency medical procedures as a First Responder.
- Considerable knowledge of departmental rules and regulations.
- General knowledge of Town streets and layout.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, officials, and members of the public, and to speak effectively before groups in public educational situations.
- Ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from High School or GED.
- Possession of a valid class C driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina or eligibility for possession.
- NC Firefighter Certification (or able to obtain through reciprocity)
- NC Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)
- NC Hazardous Materials Level I Responder (or able to obtain through reciprocity)
- Incident Command Courses meeting NFPA 1561/ NIMS-ICS 100,200,700 and 800.
- Successful completion of a physical agility test.
- Successfully pass a physical health screening.
- Requires drug testing and background verification including references, criminal record and driver's license checks prior to employment.
Candidates may provide equivalent certification with ability to receive reciprocity for IFSAC and/or National Pro Board certification through OSFM for all applicable fire certifications. See

Candidates may also produce National Registry EMT-B for reciprocity through NCOEMS.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- NC Technical Rescuer Certification
- NC Technical Rescuer Specialties (i.e. Vehicle, Confined Space, Trench)
