Haywood County Fire Departments have both citizens and firefighters on their board of directors. The contract with the county requires that the majority be outside citizens. For the most part, it has worked well with few exceptions. The disadvantage is getting citizens who are willing to serve. The contract also requires an annual meeting and a annual audit. Most annual meetings are low attended by the public.
