    Full Job Description

    • Performs fire inspections; may respond to emergency fire related situations; conducts and participates in continuing training and instruction; maintains records and files; prepares reports.
    • Conducts inspections of businesses, commercial and industrial buildings, schools, daycare centers, nursing homes, and places of public assembly for existing or potential fire hazards and to ensure compliance with city and state fire codes.
    • Conducts re-inspections to ensure that deficient conditions are corrected; prepares and submits deficiency reports; levies fines for non-compliance; develops schedules that prioritize inspections.
    • Develops and presents fire prevention/safety educational programs; conducts fire education, safety programs and training of the existing codes, laws and regulations for businesses, schools, daycare centers and the community at large.
    • Conducts plan reviews of all new and modified commercial structures, fire alarm systems and fire suppression sprinkler systems; reviews fire alarm logs to validate reported nuisance alarms.
    • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls; conducts fire investigations to determine origin and cause; collects, preserves and secures evidence collected; notifies other departments and/or agencies as needed.
    • Maintains records and files; prepares reports; enters inspection data into computer; performs related tasks as required.
    • Investigates complaints and reports of hazardous conditions and takes appropriate action.

    Qualifications

    Thorough knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of fire prevention, including inspection, fire hazards and methods of eliminating hazardous conditions, the NC fire prevention, building codes, and NFPA Standards; general knowledge of the NC General Statutes; thorough knowledge of the modern principles and practices of fire investigation, reading and interpreting blue prints, architectural drawings, etc., preparing correspondence, detailed technical reports and maintaining records, the use of standard office equipment and associated software, the use of fire related software programs, the use of equipment associated with the position, the use of standard accounting and office software; ability to make arithmetic computations, compute rates, ratios and percentages, measure locations and determine occupancy load, calculate proper flow pressures and required fire flow, establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in fire suppression and/or inspections; unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

    Special Requirements

    Possession of a valid NC Class “B” driver's license, North Carolina Firefighter Level II and ICS 100-800 certifications upon hire. North Carolina Fire Investigator and Level III Probationary Fire Inspection certification required (Level III Standard Certification preferred); inspections assignment based on certification; must be able to obtain additional Fire Inspection certification within OSFM required periods. Must meet and maintain all certification, license and training requirements for position.
