    Morehead City is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to join our Fire-EMS Department as the Assistant Chief/Fire Marshal. This is a leadership role responsible for performing the difficult protective service and administrative work assisting with the daily operations of the Department.     Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assists with planning, organizing and directing departmental operations; establishes departmental policies on fire, rescue, emergency medical and related matters.
    • Manages staff to ensure effective EMS response and firefighting operations; maintains sufficient level of preparedness and training.
    • Conducts and provides fire code enforcement through inspections, plan reviews and code and standards research; directs and reviews fire preplans; conducts business consultations; records fire inspections and sets up follow up inspections; researches applicable codes and standards; requests clarifications and official determinations.
    • Coordinates risk management through community engagement and district familiarization. 
    • Conducts monthly reports and submits an annual report to the Fire Chief.
    • Supervises and participates in rescue operations during emergency conditions; responds to and assists during motor vehicle accidents.
    • Directs and participates in fire suppression efforts; engages in incident command, operations, safety, accountability, fire attack, ventilation, salvage and overhaul and exposure protection.
    • Directs annual hydrant maintenance and fire hose testing.
    • Prepares and maintains all fire prevention records and data associated with ISO.
    • Coordinates fire prevention through fire education, public safety and code enforcement; assists, presents, plans and organizes fire education and safety classes; researches and upgrades fire prevention education; plans for and provides training aids for fire education classes.
    • Participates in and maintains required training for fire, EMS, fire inspector and specialty training.
    • Conducts fire investigations; establishes a fire investigation team; develops and maintains fire investigation reports; photographs fire/event scenes for evidence and documentation; identifies, analyzes and collects evidence; determines origin and cause.
    • Assists with the recruitment and selection of department personnel; assigns, directs, trains and inspects the work of staff; rewards, disciplines, coaches, counsels and evaluates staff performance; develops staff schedules; recommends transfers, promotions, suspensions, terminations, and demotions.
    • Receives and responds to inquiries and complaints from the public.
    • Facilitates special assignments; develops, researches and presents projects; attends and directs meetings.
    • Prepares and maintains department and inspection reports and records; purchases supplies and equipment; maintains inventory of supplies and equipment.
    • Assists with building and equipment maintenance.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Comprehensive knowledge of the laws and ordinances pertaining to fire prevention and the construction and occupancy of buildings, state fire codes and related building codes.
    • thorough knowledge of the methods of readily ascertaining the presence of existing or potential fire hazards
    • thorough knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles, practices, methods and equipment.
    • thorough knowledge of the hazards common to various types of construction and the storage of flammable and hazardous materials and explosives.
    • thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of fire investigations and fire educational and prevention programs.
    • ability to read and interpret building plans, to recognize fire hazards, and to make recommendations for their correction. 
    • ability to work independently, to observe carefully, and to interpret and enforce codes and ordinances firmly, impartially, and with tact. 
    • ability to prepare and maintain accurate, clear, and concise records of work activities. 
    • ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical personnel, law enforcement personnel, academy recruits, other Fire/EMS agencies, associates and the general public.

    The position requires Associates/Technical degree with coursework in fire science, emergency management, or related field and extensive experience in building construction, fire suppression, prevention and inspection as a Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician - Basic including considerable supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Background/drug tests are required. 

    The salary range for the position of Assistant Chief/Fire Marshal is $75,453 - $105,634.  Placement within range will depend upon a candidate’s successful qualifications and experience.  The City provides a comprehensive benefits package which can be found at the City’s website at https://moreheadcitync.org/246/Employee-Benefits
