    General Statement of Duties:  Performs inspections and enforces all State and Town of Leland (TOL) fire codes and all related ordinances; does related work as required; may be asked to respond to emergencies occurring within the Leland Fire/Rescue response area.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Good knowledge of TOL and State building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and fire ordinances as applied to construction projects;  good knowledge of various construction materials, methods, and stages of construction where possible for violations and defects that are easily observed and corrected;  ability to comprehend various inspections, and to integrate all aspects of construction in a single evaluation;  ability to read and interpret plans and specifications with the work in progress;  ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with business/Property owners, contractors, and the public;  ability to work independently;  thorough knowledge of fire prevention standards and methods, fire and explosion hazards, and fire protection equipment;  ability to use tact and firmness in enforcing the fire prevention code;  good physical condition required. Work is performed with limited supervision and requires candidate to be highly organized and self-motivated.

    Acceptable Experience and Training:  2-4 years of experience in fire code enforcement or completion of a trade school course related to the area of employment and approved by the Code Qualification Board; extensive experience in modern fire scene operations, fire prevention; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Additional Requirements

    ·         North Carolina Standard Level I Certification in fire prevention

    ·         North Carolina Certified Firefighter

    ·         North Carolina Certified Hazardous Materials Responder Level I

    ·         Valid North Carolina Class C driver’s license

    ·         NIMS (700, 800, 100 & 200)

    Environmental Conditions and Physical Demands:  This job is generally performed out of doors and requires frequent site visits and exposure to potential hazards such as exposure to extreme weather condition, exposed heights, electrical wires or machinery, hostile fire, unstable emergency scenes, etc.  Work requires occasional strenuous physical effort.
