Fire Battalion Chief – Fire Marshal
Hiring Range: $61,200 – 78,030 /Year

The City of Fayetteville is currently recruiting for a Fire Battalion Chief to be assigned as Fire Marshal. This position will supervise, plan and coordinate the activities and operations of the Community Risk Reduction Program to include, but not limited to, the oversight of all Fire Prevention/Fire Code Enforcement actions, Fire and Life Safety Programs, and Fire Origin and Cause Investigations. The Fire Marshal also serves as the Public Information Officer for the Fire/Emergency Management Department.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Provide supervision to lower level prevention staff and provide oversight for fire prevention and life safety programs, manages the false alarm and fire investigation programs, writes policies, manages budget and other duties as assigned. Manages and participates in the enforcement of the North Carolina Fire Code, which involves inspections of all applicable commercial and residential properties in the City. Recommends updates to the City of Fayetteville Fire Protection Ordinance and Fee Schedule. Provides guidance to staff and customers on technical matters and issues interpretations on fire codes.
- May serve as the department Public Information Officer, including writing bulletin announcements, newspaper articles, and press releases.
- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of staff responsible for providing fire suppression, emergency medical services and special operations response for a battalion of the Fayetteville Fire/EM Department.
- Coordinate operations and activities at multiple fire stations within a battalion; participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for the assigned battalion; identify resource needs; recommend and implement policies and procedures; meet with managerial staff regularly to discuss future plans and progress toward goals and objectives.
- Participate in training, motivating and evaluating personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and recommend terminations as appropriate.
- Direct, coordinate and review the work plan for the assigned battalion personnel; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities and projects; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures; prepare monthly report on progress and activities of a battalion.
- Identify opportunities for improving work methods and procedures; review with appropriate management staff and implement improvements.
- Participate in the investigation of accidents involving City property and/or personnel; investigate worker's compensation claims; process claims.
- Serve as primary incident commander at emergency incident scenes.
Key Qualifications include:
- Fire Marshal: minimum of 12 years of experience as a fire professional including a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience; minimum of five (5) years of experience as a fire code official.
- Equivalent to an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
Required Certifications:
Fire Marshal: Firefighter II certification; Fire Service Instructor II certification; Fire Officer II certification. ICS 400;NC Fire Inspector Level 3 certification
Fire Chief 101 certification, Preferred.
