    The Cabarrus County Emergency Management/Fire Marshal’s Office will be hiring a full-time Fire Manpower Unit that will consist of (1) Fire Captain, (1) Fire Lieutenant and (2) Firefighters that will respond with local fire departments to assist with calls. Schedule will be 10 hour shifts (daytime); 4 days a week with a plan to transition to 24 hour coverage beginning in July 2017. The unit will go live in January 2017. Please see the job announcements below and forward to anyone you think would be interested. The closing date is being extended to Friday, September 23rd, 2016 as it was incorrectly posted online. The below link will provide access to the county website and the ability to apply for the position(s) and review available benefits, if interested.     TITLE: FIRE FIREFIGHTER 
    DEPARTMENT: EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
    POSITION NUMBER: 2715003

    Grade: GRADE 64

    HIRING RANGE: $33,153.04 - $38,384.81 
    HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week; schedule varies 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM, M-F

    General Definition of work:
    This position is responsible for providing fire-suppression response to protect life and property by controlling and extinguishing fires. Responds to medical emergencies and after-effects of other hazardous conditions. This position also maintains firefighter equipment and provides training to the general public on fire prevention awareness/education. Performs other duties as assigned by Fire Captain/Lieutenant.

    Essential Functions: 
    • Receives and responds to fire/rescue related incidents. Performs duties related to emergency operations involving rescue, fire suppression, and hazardous materials incidents.
    • Maintains apparatus and equipment for emergency response.
    • Performs daily activities by completing incident reports and daily logs, entering records of equipment check and repairs and maintaining facility and grounds.
    • Assists with initial fire investigations to determine cause and origin and request fire investigator on call as needed.
    • Ensures personnel safety and compliance with CFR 1910.120.

    Typical Tasks: 
    • Assists County Fire Departments with pre-fire planning.
    • Assists with fire prevention/education programs.
    • Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
    • Performs related tasks as required.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
    • Maintains considerable knowledge of firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials and other emergency related operations.
    • Maintain a working knowledge of computer programs necessary to accurately use and maintain fire reports, inspection records, and other related systems and databases.
    • Working knowledge of firefighting and fire behavior. Ability to conduct research to stay abreast on all aspects of current fire science and fire protection technology information.
    • Knowledge of medical responder treatment protocols.
    • Ability to assist county fire service on emergency incidents as required.
    • Ability to effectively deal with the public during periods of extreme crisis.
    • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with all segments of the population, often during high stress situations.

    Training and Experience:
    High school diploma or equivalency and at least one (1) to two (2) years’ experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Candidate must possess the following certifications/credentials: NC Firefighter (previously NC Firefighter Level II) - IFSAC and/or Pro-Board certification from another state may be accepted based on the candidate’s ability to meet the NC reciprocity transfer process; National Incident Management System (NIMS) Levels IS-100.b, IS-200.b, IS-700.a, and IS-800.b; Emergency Medical Technician (EMT); Hazardous Materials Responder (Operations Level) and NC Technical Rescuer or the ability to obtain this certification within (2) years of employment. 

    This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds or more of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying accurate, detailed, important instructions to others loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth and color perception, night and peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or parts, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing surroundings. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, hazards, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. Position is a 10 hour shift to cover peak call times Monday through Friday (7am-6pm). Hiring for position will take place in late fall and will not start employment until January 2017.
