    FIRE INSPECTOR / INVESTIGATOR

     

    General Statement of Duties

    Performs technical work in the inspections and enforcement of the North Carolina Fire Prevention Codes

     

    Essential Functions of the Class

    An employee in this class is responsible for the enforcement of the Fire Prevention Code and inspection of buildings.  This employee is subject to the usual hazards associated with fire service including but not limited to fire suppression and fire investigations.  This employee also assists and participates in all activities of the Fire Prevention Program.  Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal and is reviewed through periodic reports. 

     

    Illustrative Examples of Work and Other Functions

    Inspects buildings and all areas in which persons work, live or congregate for any purpose: list all violations and recommend corrective measures

    Insures adequacy and maintenance of all exits and fire escapes

    Plans and conducts programs of public education and information regarding fire prevention and life safety

    Maintains fire inspection records

    Conducts investigations of fires when requested by a fire chief and also responds Air truck to fire scenes for additional support when needed.

    Performs related duties as required

     

    Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Considerable knowledge of fire prevention and safety principles, methods, rules, codes, regulations and ordinances

    Ability to recognize fire hazards

    Ability to make detailed fire investigations, analyze findings, and prepare reports and findings in a court worthy manner

    Considerable firefighting skills including but not limited to technical rescue, fire apparatus driving / operations, and suppression duties.

    Ability to maintain effective working conditions with the public and co-workers

     

    Desirable Training and Experience

    Graduation from high school or equivalent to a high school graduate

    Experience in fire prevention, firefighting, fire equipment and related equipment

    Computer skills

     

    Additional Desirable Skills / Training / Education

    NC State Certified Fire Instructor

    NC Certified Fire Prevention Level I, II or III Inspector as per the NC Building Code Qualification Board

     

    Salary will be based on the applicant's qualification status.
