The City of Wilson, North Carolina, operating under a Council-Manager form of government, seeks a Fire/Rescue Services Chief who is a visionary and innovative leader with a demonstrated history of building esprit des corps within this accredited department, as well as a being a skilled collaborator and advocate with city government and community. The new Chief will be passionate about and support the mission of “We are Focused on Excellent Customer Service, “Dedicated to Life Safety”. The position is open due to retirement.
Organization, Position Overview and Responsibilities: The City is governed using a Council/Manager form of Government. The City Manager is the chief executive officer of the City and manages the day-to-day operations of 14 departments and over 740 employees with an operating budget of $235 Million. The City of Wilson is well managed and has several high performing and award winning departments such as accredited police, fire and downtown development departments and the use of an award winning 2030 Comprehensive Plan is guiding Wilson’s development. Reporting to the Deputy City Manager, the Fire Chief will lead a fire department with a budget of $8.49 Million, 97 budgeted personnel who work in Operations (82), Planning and Accreditation (1), Training and Special Operations (2), Community Risk Reduction (7) and administration (5), five stations and a supported fire and rescue academy. Handling about 4800 medical and fire calls per year, the department has dedicated engine and truck companies, and operates a 24 on, 24 off (Berkley) schedule. Special equipment and services include: technical rescue, emergency medical first responder, and hazardous materials response.
Qualifications and Pay: The City seeks a fire safety leader with a minimum of 15 years progressive fire safety experience and 5-7 years of cross-functional and progressively responsible experience including fire suppression, prevention, EMS and administrative work at rank of Battalion Chief or higher; a BA/BS degree (Master’s degree highly preferred). NFA certification is preferred. The salary range is $95,076 - $148,319. Base salary and compensation are negotiable within the band based on experience and qualifications. There is a residency requirement within six months of employment.
