
Located on North Carolina’s beautiful Outer Banks, the Town of Kitty Hawk, population 3,800 and up to 17,000 seasonal, is seeking qualified applicants for position of Fire Chief. The primary purpose of this position is the overall management and supervision of the Town’s Fire Department including fire prevention, fire suppression, ocean rescue and first responder medical services. This position is a member of the Town’s senior management team, participates on the Town’s emergency preparedness team and reports to the Town Manager.
Responsibilities include directing day to day departmental operations and establishing overall departmental policies and operational procedures; planning and preparing the annual budget as well as monitoring expenditures; managing paid full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees and volunteer staff to maintain sufficient level of preparedness and training; ensures proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in fire science or a related field and at least seven (7) years of professional supervisory experience in fire service. Must possess a North Carolina Firefighter II, Fire Officer II Certification, first responder certification, a North Carolina Fire Prevention II Certification and have completed the NC Fire and Rescue Commission’s Chief 101 course, or the ability to attain these certifications within one year.
The Department has a residency requirement that stipulates personnel must reside within 10 miles of the Town line.
