Deputy Fire Chief
The City of Burlington is seeking a highly motivated, skilled, knowledgeable, and experienced Deputy Fire Chief, well versed in emergency operations, training, community risk reduction and administration. The Deputy Fire Chief will serve as second-in-command of the Fire Department and must be able to consistently demonstrate high performance in complex local government organizations. The new Deputy Fire Chief must be a visionary and innovative leader with a demonstrated history of building esprit des corps within a progressive fire department, as well as being a skilled collaborator and advocate within city government and the community. The position is open due to retirement.
The Burlington Fire Department operates nine (9) emergency response companies from six (6) fire stations, responding to approximately 9,000 emergency incidents annually. This is accomplished through six (6) engine companies, two (2) truck companies and two (2) battalion chiefs operating on the 24/48 schedule. The department is comprised of 105 uniformed personnel, 1 civilian and 2 part-time employees. The Deputy Fire Chief will be responsible for all operational aspects of the department. The City of Burlington currently holds an ISO Class 3 rating.
Reporting directly to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief works closely with all members of the fire department, across city and county departments, community stakeholders, citizens, developers, consultants as well as local, state and federal agencies to ensure that the goals of the City are met with regard to providing essential, comprehensive urban fire and rescue services. The Deputy Fire Chief also assumes a key role in the city’s overall emergency management program and collaborates with all public safety agency partners.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in public administration, fire protection or closely related field is required, while a master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive career fire service experience is required with at least five (5) of those years being at the Battalion Chief rank, or higher, in a municipal fire department. A North Carolina Class “B” driver’s license, NC Firefighter Level II, Hazmat Operations, Fire Instructor Level II, NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 is required.
The ideal candidate will be credentialed as a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) from the Center for Public Safety Excellence, be a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer (EFO) Program and completion of advanced local government advanced training such as the NC School of Government Municipal Administration Program. Hiring range is $62,150 - $68,365 or higher depending upon experience and qualifications. Residency within a 15-mile perimeter of Burlington City limits is highly desired.
