    Job Description Summary

    Instructs all levels of course work assigned within the Fire Protection Technology curriculum. Supervises students in the online environment, and possibly classroom. Plans, organizes, and directs program from its inception to include program marketing and student recruitment. Develops teaching materials, outlines, activities, and handouts for each course. Participates in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation activities to improve the instructional quality of the program. Assists with coordination of Continuing Education training in Fire Protection. Maintains professional certifications and seek opportunities for professional development. Performs duties as assigned by Division Dean.

    Duties

    1. Maintains knowledge of and compliance with the State Board of Community Colleges approved standards for the curriculum;
    2. Maintains knowledge of and compliance with standards of The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the NC Department of Insurance Fire Training Division;
    3. Maintains open lines of communication with North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) regarding course curriculum, course information data;
    4. Maintains knowledge of College policies, procedures, and practices and communicates this information to full-time and adjunct faculty. Ensures that policies are supported and carried out;
    5. Ensures that all college reports and requested information are submitted promptly and accurately;
    6. Develops and submits to division dean proposed departmental class schedules and faculty assignments;
    7. Supervises the planning, budgeting and use of departmental funds;
    8. Participates in hiring process, including the development of job announcements, recruitment of qualified applicants for college and high school campuses and other locations as needed, reviewing of credentials, screening applicant files, interviewing, and recommendation to President;
    9. Orients new adjunct and full-time faculty to the College and to their specific functions;
    10. Provides feedback to faculty on performance. Arranges opportunities for instructor remediation if appropriate. Identifies and encourages professional development opportunities for department faculty;
    11. Reviews department curriculum on an on-going basis; including course outlines, textbooks, library holdings and related materials. Recommends the revision, deletion, and addition of content;
    12. Supervises Fire Service Continuing Education Coordinator for quality of work in scheduling in-service fire training classes;
    13. Assumes instructional responsibility of 12 contact hours per week. Schedules at least five office hours per week for assisting students;
    14. Serves on campus committees;
    15. Coordinates department relations with the community and employers;
    16. Performs other duties assigned by the division dean;
    17. Teaches all levels of Fire Protection courses specific to the curriculum including lab and classroom; 
    18. Practices, teaches, and supervises students to facilitate compliance with OSHA standards;
    19. Updates knowledge and skills to maintain currency of practice through study, seminars, and/or on-the-job practice;
    20. Designs and implements formative and summative evaluation procedures as means to assess student progress;
    21. Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Requirements

    1. Associate’s degree in Fire Service Technology or a related field;
    2. Five years of work experience as a full-time officer in a paid fire service within the last 10 years of employment;
    3. Teaching experience within the last 10 years in a fire department, community college, or other educational environment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    1. Bachelor’s degree in a Fire Service related discipline.
