South Salisbury Fire Department is currently seeking highly motivated individuals to serve in the capacity of Part-Time Firefighter. Today’s fire service is an extremely challenging environment and we believe it takes dedicated individuals possessing a strong passion and desire to serve their community.
Department Background/Profile
Our history is rich in tradition; South Salisbury Fire Department received its organizational charter on February 12th, 1951 and for over 67 years we continue to build on this heritage to meet the future needs of our taxpayers and customers. The men and women serving before us have made possible our ability to provide services at the highest level to continually meet the challenges of our area. Currently, we serve a population of over 3,200 residents encompassing an 11.5 square mile area within the Litaker Township of Rowan County. The fire district of South Salisbury is a dynamic area consisting of the following occupancy types: residential development including (1) apartment complex; multiple retail stores/shops; numerous commercial and industrial properties; (8) worship facilities; multiple county maintained facilities; approximately (4) miles of Interstate 85 and (4) miles of rail lines; (2) public education facilities; a 24 hour residential care facility and a motorsports complex. Our department currently responds to over 700 incidents each year in the areas of fire suppression, emergency medical care, motor vehicle accidents, general service and hazardous materials response. In addition to emergency responses, we take pride in the delivery of public education programs throughout our community to encourage positive fire safety practices and ensure a better quality of life.
Job Duties/Functions
- Respond to emergency incidents and provide mitigation/command/control functions
- Drive and operate all department apparatus as well as perform apparatus/equipment maintenance
Ø Candidate shall display considerable knowledge and skill in the operations and maintenance of the various types of fire department apparatus and equipment used in fire suppression activities, including specifically the areas of fire service hydraulics and pump operations.
- Perform building and grounds maintenance
- Perform hydrant testing/maintenance and static source (water point) testing/maintenance
- Perform pre-incident survey updates for each business/commercial occupancy in district
- Provide/assist with fire prevention and education programs
- Ensure proper documentation and record keeping of reports, documents, etc.
- Ensure apparatus and equipment record books are completed for each day of work
- Maintain the department log book with completed activities for each day of work
- Other duties as assigned
Staffing Levels (Effective February 1st, 2018)
- 0600 hours until 1800 hours (Monday through Sunday) – 12 hour part-time position
- 0600 hours until 1400 hours (Monday through Friday) – 8 hour part-time position
- 1000 hours until 1800 hours (Monday through Friday) – 8 hour part-time position
- 1000 hours until 1800 hours (Saturday & Sunday) – 8 hour part-time position
- 1800 hours until 0600 hours (Monday through Sunday) – 12 hour part-time position
Application Process
- Applicant submits a fire department interest form.
- Applicant is e-mailed an application packet.
- Applicant submits completed and signed application.
- If selected, an initial interview is scheduled and performed.
- If approved to move forward in the process, a formal background report is requested/conducted.
- A post interview or follow-up is performed to review the results of the formal background report.
- Applicant receives approval/denial of employment.
