    Apex, NC – Assistant Fire Chief

    The Town of Apex, North Carolina seeks an Assistant Fire Chief to become an integral part of the fire department’s leadership team.   This is a newly created position to compliment the current assistant chief due to the growing workload of the department.  The successful candidate will be one that has a proven history of achieving successful outcomes through a variety of tasks and initiatives.  This individual will need to be adept at transforming a strategic vision into reality through detailed planning, delegating tasks, ensuring project execution, and being accountable for results.  This position promises to provide the right person the ability to greatly influence the continuing emergence of the Apex Fire Department as a model of fire service excellence.

    The Community

    The Town of Apex is a fast-growing and extremely vibrant community.  Located in western Wake County, Apex provides easy access to the entire Triangle Region, including the Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Research Triangle Park.  Our community is comprised of a diverse population that comes together at downtown events such as Peak Fest (May), Peak City Pig Fest (June), Olde Fashioned Fourth of July, Apex Music Festival (September) and the annual Christmas Parade.  While these events take place in our beautiful Salem Street downtown area, Apex also offers convenient shopping and dining options.  Lastly, there are a multitude of outdoor recreational activities available through the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department and their six outstanding regional parks including the Apex Community Park and the Apex Nature Park.  The Town has 11 miles of beautiful greenways and trails and 7.5 miles under construction.   The combination of all of these examples, and more led to Apex being named as the #1 Best Place Live by Money Magazine in 2015.

    About the department and position:

    Reporting to the Fire Chief, this Assistant Chief will be responsible for leading a growing operational staff that is currently comprised of 72 full-time firefighters.  As the department continues to evolve in order to meet the growing needs of the community, the assistant chief will be responsible for ensuring consistent expectations and accountability across all three of the department’s shifts.  Working through battalion chiefs and company officers, the Assistant Chief will ensure that the fire department is fully prepared to effectively address the fire and non-fire risks that our community faces.  This assistant chief will work closely with the department’s current assistant chief who will be responsible for support services functions such as logistics, training and research.   

    Current department initiatives:

    In addition to adding this assistant chief, the Apex Fire Department is currently pursuing:

    • Accreditation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) including:
    • Finalization of a five-year Strategic Plan
    • Creation of a Community Risk Assessment and Standard of Cover with assistance from the CPSE Technical Advisor Program.
    • Completion of our self-assessment utilizing the CPSE Fire and Emergency Service Self-Assessment Manual
    • Purchase of a 107’ aerial ladder apparatus required to add an additional ladder company
    • Designing the remodel of Station 1
    • Further improvements to operational capabilities and effectiveness in conjunction with our mutual and automatic aid partners

    Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

    A minimum of 15 years progressive full-time career fire experience with at least two of those years serving as a battalion chief or higher.  A Bachelor's degree in a field related to fire science, management, or public administration. Preference will be given to graduates or current participants of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program as well as graduates of the Managing Fire Officer's Program.  Designation as a Chief Fire Officer or other professional credential through the Center for Public Safety Excellence is preferred as well.  Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license, and possession of a Fire Officer III certification, EMT-Basic certification, HazMat Level I Responder, NIMS 700,800,100,200,300,400 are also required. 

    NOTE:   Top candidates will need to make arrangements to participate in an Assessment Center on August 16-17, 2018.  Candidates selected for the assessment process will be notified via email by August 1st

    The Town of Apex is committed to offering competitive and fair compensation.  The starting salary will be determined by qualifications, experience and education.  The salary for this position ranges from $68,730 to $113,027 and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
