    Description

    Beginning of Range is $59,038.  Offered salary depends on qualifications

    Performs difficult technical work in the review of construction plans and specifications and field inspections to determine compliance with applicable codes; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal.

    Examples of Duties
    • Performs public education for fire safety via fire prevention programs and standard operating guidelines.
    • Ensures that the Fire Prevention Division receives proper training, has appropriate certifications, and attends periodic meetings as assigned by the Fire Marshal.
    • Coordinates and manages the activities for Fire Prevention week.
    • Performs building inspections and plan reviews to determine compliance with the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code and maintains aggressive Morrisville Fire/Rescue inspections schedule.
    • Performs fire alarm and sprinkler shop drawing reviews.
    • Works closely with building inspections department.
    • Conducts inspections of work performed under issued permits.
    • Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fire Marshal.
    • Assists contractors in providing technical assistance and interpretations of the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code.
    • Provides public address to schools, nursing homes, industries and individuals regarding fire and emergency prevention and other public events as assigned.
    • Adheres to the department's safety rules and regulations.
    • Assists the Fire Marshal with budgetary preparation for fire prevention education and outreach services.
    • Maintains all required certifications and trainings required of the position.
    • Performs other related duties as required.
    • Performs construction, annual and special fire inspections in all new and existing public buildings;
    • Performs fire inspections for issuance of special permits;
    • Conducts re-inspections and ensures that re-inspections are conducted within approved time frame;
    • Conducts plan review on new construction projects to verify code compliance;
    • Schedules and confirms appointments for inspections;
    • Maintains detailed inspection reports and enters into database;
    • Verifies and sends inspections billing information to finance office;
    • Performs fire education and training for businesses, day care facilities, and schools;
    • Assists with conducting the department's home fire safety survey program;
    • Assists with developing, scheduling and conducting training for the CERT team;
    • Serves as a member of the fire investigation committee;
    • Answers questions and provides technical assistance to the public, contractors, architects and engineers;
    • Provides information for pre-fire plans
    • Plans and performs fire prevention activities;
    • Responds to emergency scenes as necessary;
    • Participate in fire investigations as needed
    • Assumes duties of the fire marshal in the fire marshal's absence;
    • Performs related tasks as required.
    Typical Qualifications

    Thorough knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of fire prevention including inspection, hazards and elimination of dangerous conditions; thorough knowledge of state fire code and nationally recognized standards; general knowledge of the principles and practices of building construction and electrical and mechanical systems; ability to recognize existing and potential fire hazards; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to prepare clear and concise written reports; ability to interpret and enforce rules and regulations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to conduct thorough plan review for building, sprinkler, fire alarm and other suppression/detection systems; ability in the operation of Microsoft Office products and personal computers; ability to organize work and self-motivate.
     

    Supplemental Information

    Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited two-year community college with an associate's degree in fire protection technology, fire science or construction technology and extensive experience as a fire inspector and in the plan review process.  Must also have five or more years of experience in the fire service field.
