Opening Date: Monday, July 1, 2019 Closing Date: Monday, July 22, 2019 Firefighter I (Fire Department)

An employee in this class is primarily responsible for firefighting. The incumbent is individually accountable, but functions within a firefighting company to complete assigned tasks in the plan to fight fires and perform rescue operations. Work also includes responding to emergency medical calls, providing emergency medical services, participating in training classes, cleaning fire equipment, and cleaning the fire station. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a firefighter II, fire lieutenant or captain, and is reviewed through observation, reports, and discussion concerning the quality and effectiveness of fire efforts and related duties.

Minimum Experience and Training One (1) year direct experience performing firefighting and rescue work; graduation from an accredited high school or general education degree (GED).

Mandatory Certifications Certification as a North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission Firefighter I/II; Certification as a North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician; Successful completion of NIMS (National Incident Management System Courses) IS 700, IS 800, ICS 100; Must possess a safe driving record and obtain a Class B driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina within 90 days of hire date.

Special Requirements Incumbent will be required to adhere to the “on-call” practices and procedures followed by the Fire Department.

Physical Requirements While wearing 50 lbs to simulate structural gear w/SCBA including face mask a) Climb up and down step(s) that are 24 inches in height (3-points of contact); b) Climb up and down a ladder (3-points of contact) 25 feet in height; c) Lift 50 lbs from a starting point of 6 inches to a height of 30 inches; d) Lift 32 lbs from a starting point of 6 inches to a height of 60 inches;e) Carry (both hands) 50 lbs a minimum of 100 feet; f) Push/pull horizontally 125 lbs a distance of 100 feet; g) Push vertically 60 lbs a distance of 2 feet; h)Pull vertically 80 lbs a distance of 2 feet; i) Forward bend from a standing position for 5 minutes; j) Forward bend from a kneeling position for 5 minutes; k) From a standing position, crouch down as if sitting on heels, then back up to standing position.

Starting Salary: $36,616.00 Annual (Entry Level)
