    Fire Chief

    SALARY: $69,519.00 - $111,230.00 Annually

    GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK::

    Performs complex professional and administrative work managing and directing all activities of the Fire and Emergency Service Department; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Public Safety. Supervision is exercised over all department personnel.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:: Planning, organizing, directing and supervising all fire suppression, fire prevention programs, and emergency services; coordinating work with Director of Public Safety and other departments; maintaining records and preparing reports.

    • Plans, organizes, directs and supervises the Fire and Emergency Services' daily administration and operations, and fire suppression and fire prevention programs; coordinates work with the Director of Public Safety and other departments.
    • Coordinates operational activities among battalion chiefs, division chief, administrative staff and maintenance division
    • Plans short and long-range strategic goals for the continued growth and development of the Fire and Emergency Services department.
    • Develops, administers, and enforces departmental policies, procedures and regulations.
    • Keeps informed as to distribution of personnel, property and operations of the department.
    • Prepares department budget and monitors expenditures.
    • Directs and supervises large scale fires and disasters.
    • Evaluates departmental equipment and apparatus needs and recommends purchases of new apparatus and supplies.
    • Assigns personnel and equipment to perform technical services.
    • Coordinates staffing, recruitment, and promotional process
    • Evaluates work performance of employees and establishes employee goals and objectives
    • Prepares, reviews and maintains reports and records on personnel time and attendance sheets; inspects personnel, equipment, apparatus and station maintenance
    • Supervises the operation of departmental in-service training of personnel.
    • Coordinates the management and implementation of the City's emergency response activities and staff.
    • Prepares and recommends updates to the City Emergency Response Plan.
    • Audits Fire and Emergency Services' fire incident, EMS incident and inspections reports
    • Manages Fire Department NFPA 1500 and safety programs
    • Conducts fire investigations to determine origin and cause
    • Manages and directs special projects such as equipment testing, hydrant mapping, and computer automation
    • Manages the accreditation program for Fire and Emergency Services Department.
    • Directs the inspection of buildings and other properties for fire hazards and responds to public inquiries concerning life safety codes

    • Performs related tasks as required

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE::

    Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fire science or related field and more than 5 years experience in firefighting work including 2 to 5 years supervisory experience in the fire service.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES::

    Comprehensive knowledge of modern firefighting and emergency medical and rescue methods; comprehensive knowledge of the use and operation of a wide variety of fire motor, rescue and auxiliary apparatus; comprehensive knowledge of laws, rules and regulations relating to fire control and prevention; ability to plan, initiate and carry out long-term programs in fire administration, employee training and fire prevention; ability to plan, assign and coordinate activities performed by a large group of employees in varied firefighting and rescue work; ability to operate personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, associates and the general public.
