    Job Summary/Scope

    This position is responsible for inspecting buildings and structures for compliance with fire and life safety codes. The purpose of this position is to enforce the state and local fire and life safety code. Successful performance helps prevent fires.

    Job Responsibilities

    Major Duties

    • Inspects all buildings within the city limits for compliance with fire codes.
    • Assists with mechanical, electrical, and building inspections.
    • Explains code violations to business owners; advises concerning correction of violations.
    • Prepares fire inspection reports; maintains hard copy and computerized files.
    • Reviews all commercial building plans for compliance with the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code.
    • Issues permits for open burning; issues citations for fire lane parking violations.
    • Attends Technical Review Committee meetings to discuss site plans with engineers and developers as assigned.
    • Assists with and participates in the design of evacuation plans for all types of buildings; monitors fire and evacuation drills in institutional and educational buildings.
    • Installs smoke detectors in qualified homes;
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Guidelines
    • Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, city ordinances and policies, state building and fire codes, and federal, state, and local laws.  These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

    Minimum Qualifications

    FIRE INSPECTOR/FIREFIGHTER
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

    • Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science Technology or related field including some experience in building and or fire code inspections and considerable experience in fire protection services.
    • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Possession of the highest level of Firefighter Certification offered by the State of North Carolina;
    • Certified as Standard North Carolina Level III Fire Inspector (external candidates must show equivalent and have ability to obtain NC Certification within a designated time);  
    • North Carolina Life Safety Educator II
    • Schedule may require some nights and weekends to meet job requirements;
    • Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers' license (external candidates must show equivalent and ability to obtain within a designated time);
    • Possession of a current CPR Certification.
    FIRE INSPECTOR/CIVILIAN
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 
    • Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science Technology or related field including some experience in building and or fire code inspections and considerable experience in fire protection services.
    • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Certified as North Carolina Level III Fire Inspector (external candidates must show equivalent and have ability to obtain NC Certification within a designated time);

    • Knowledge of fire inspection techniques, principles, and practices.
    • Knowledge of building, mechanical, and electrical codes.
    • Knowledge of laws and regulations relating to the control and prevention of fires.
    • Knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices.
    • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
    • Skill in operating computers and other office equipment.
    • Skill in the use of radio/communications equipment.
    • Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.
    • Skill in public speaking and public relations.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    Work Environment/Physical Demands

    The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching.  The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.

    The work is typically performed in an office and at inspection sites. The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. The work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
