    General Definition of Work:

    Performs intermediate protective service work in fire prevention and investigation; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard.
     

    Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

    Performing fire inspections; origin and cause fire investigations; maintaining fire prevention documentation; responding to emergency fire and medical situations, maintaining equipment and facilities, developing, coordinating and implementing community risk reduction programs.

    • Performs state mandated fire inspections.
    • Performs necessary paperwork associated with state mandated fire inspection.
    • Performs necessary data entry associated with state mandated fire inspections.
    • Performs visits to locations where complaint investigations have been made.
    • Completes community risk reduction programs as assigned by management.
    • Assists with or completes fire origin and cause investigations on fires.
    • Follow ups on non-compliance report letters to ensure repairs have been made.
    • Reviews fire protection system reports and sends non-compliancy letters to appropriate persons to ensure repairs.
    • Participates in required training in order to maintain level of certification.
    • Performs related tasks as required.
    Education and Experience:

    Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 2 to 5 years experience in fire suppression, fire prevention or fire training.

    Possession of the following certifications/licenses at time of hire:

    • NC Class C Driver's License
    • NC Firefighter
    • NC Hazardous Materials Level I Responder
    • NC Emergency Medical Technician - Basic
    • NC Fire Inspector I
    • NC Probationary Fire Inspector II
    • NC Fire Inspector II (Within 12 months of employment)
    • NC Fire & Life Safety Educator II (Within 12 months of employment)
    • NC/IAAI Fire Investigative Technician (Within 12 months of employment)
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Thorough knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of fire prevention, including inspection, hazards and elimination of dangerous conditions; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City; thorough knowledge of the laws and ordinances of state and city regarding fire prevention and arson; general knowledge of the principles and practices of building construction and electrical and mechanical systems; ability to recognize existing and potential fire hazards in a wide variety of structures and installations; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to prepare clear and concise written reports; ability to interpret and enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; mechanical aptitude; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
