THE TOWN OF MARS HILL, N.C. is seeking a qualified individual for the following position:

TITLE: Deputy Fire Chief – Mars Hill Fire Department

Full Time Position

DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, the Deputy Fire Chief is responsible for providing overall support to the fire chief who oversees the operations of the Mars Hill Fire Department. The deputy chief must be prepared to personally respond to fire and emergency calls for service, work varied shifts, and provide supervision to 30 volunteer and five (5) career personnel. The deputy chief will perform a variety of administration and professional duties necessary to maintain two stations and multiple apparatus used in response to fire, medical and search and rescue situations. The deputy chief will work with the fire chief to provide public contact work in the both the Town of Mars Hill and the Mars Hill Rural Fire District.

The deputy fire chief is responsible for all fireground activities in the absence of the fire chief and will assist with fire inspections, developing and enforcing policies, procedures and regulations as determined by the fire chief. The deputy fire chief will assist the fire chief with scheduling and planning training, preparing and presenting public presentations for fire prevention and education events. The deputy chief will engage collaboratively and developmentally with fire department staff, town management and community partners. Provides other duties as may be assigned by the fire chief or town manager.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must be high school graduate and have extensive experience in firefighting and fire department operations and command structure. Candidate must have NC Firefighter certification, EMT-Basic, a valid NC operator license (Class B). Must obtain NC Fire Inspector Certification after hire.

LOCATION: Primary duty station is the Mars Hill Fire Department located in Mars Hill, NC.

SALARY: Salary dependent upon education, training and experience. Hiring range $38,000-$44,000 per year.
