ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF
City of Kings Mountain Fire Department
Established in 1931 the Kings Mountain Fire Department serves the second largest municipality in Cleveland County. We currently roster 30 personnel: (3) Administration, (18) Operations, (7) Part time Operations, and (2) Volunteer. We utilize three 24-hour rotating shifts to provide continuous coverage 365 days a year to the 10,600 citizens of Kings Mountain, and travelers and visitors alike. We operate out of two fire stations, which house three engines, one ladder, one rescue, and two brush units. All of our personnel are North Carolina Certified Firefighters, and North Carolina Emergency Medical Technicians, among many other qualifications. We currently respond to 800 +/- calls for service per year, and are currently preparing to begin responding to life threatening calls that are medical in nature. Kings Mountain Fire Department currently holds an ISO Class 4 rating.

The City of Kings Mountain is located at the junction of Highway 74 and Interstate 85 approximately 33 miles west of Charlotte, NC. The current population of just under 11,000 people, and an area of 10.6 square miles, is rapidly growing with several housing projects currently underway. About the Position
The Assistant Fire Chief is responsible for planning and supervising the activities and response requirements of fire suppression and emergency response personnel for two fire stations during a 24-hour shift work schedule. Emphasis of work is on management of personnel, serving as incident commander, creating and communicating new policies/procedures, community relations, time management, fiscal and capitol resource management, overseeing the maintenance of equipment, maintenance of budgets, investigating fires, and other related work. The Assistant Fire Chief will be largely responsible for the day-to-day operation of the fire department. The Assistant Fire Chief will be well versed in emergency operations, and will be very strong in his/her ability to lead the department’s training program. An employee in this class is the first level of management in the department and must exercise significant independence of action, discretion, and judgement in the department’s response to emergencies. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Chief and is evaluated based on individual and team performance objectives, observation, reports, and quality of work performed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- o Thorough knowledge of City’s geography, street locations, and hydrant locations
- o Thorough knowledge of current firefighting practices and procedures
- o Thorough knowledge of firefighting hazards and related safety precautions
- o Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and management of human resources
- o Ability to take command of emergency situations, determine the method of suppression, and supervise personnel performing suppression activities ensuring proper procedures and safety
- o Ability to supervise personnel at different locations throughout the city; ability to plan and present on-going training to personnel to ensure readiness and meet safety requirements
- o Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other fire department employees, other city employees, and the general public
- o Ability to conduct fire prevention/fire safety training from school age children to senior adults
- o Ability to deliver fire department presentations to community groups
- o Ability to represent the City fire department in a positive and professional manner
- o Skilled in operating fire apparatus such as trucks, fire pumps, hoses, hand tools, rescue tools, radios, and any other firefighting tools.
Physical Requirements
Work in this position s characteristically supervisory in nature. However, depending upon the circumstances of any given day the employee may be exposed to some of the same physical requirements of other fire employees which is heavy work requiring exertion of and/or in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force consistently to move objects. Employee must have the physical stamina to endure the rigors of intensive firefighting, rescue and salvage work. Employee must have the visual acuity to be the operator of truck and other equipment and be able to distinguish colors and see peripherally from both eyes.
Desirable Education and Experience
- o A minimum of 7 years of supervisory experience in the rank of Captain, Fire Marshal, Assistant Fire Marshal, Training Chief, Battalion Chief, Deputy Chief, and above with a municipal department.
- o A minimum of 10 years with a Firefighter II certification
- o A minimum of an Associate degree in fire science technology, or a Bachelor degree in a related field.
Special Requirements
The preferred applicant will possess the following education, certifications, license, etc.

- o Qualified Fire Instructor Level II (Level III preferred)
- o Fire Inspector II Probationary (obtain Standard within one year)

- o NIMS 100, 200, 300, 700, 800
- o Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
- o Clean criminal background
- o Must be 21 years or older
Other Requirements
- o Successful complete an annual physical per National Fire Protection Association 1582
- o Subject to random drug testing
- o Monday through Friday 08:00-17:00, and as required

$45,000.00 - $67,000.00
