The City of Statesville, North Carolina, operating under a Council-Manager form of government, seeks an outstanding teambuilding leader to be their next Fire Chief. The successful candidate has served in multiple fire service functions and roles with a track record of role modeling a passion for their work, and advocacy for best practices in staff recruitment and retention, as well as acquisition and access to equipment, technology and training. The community desires their Fire Chief to be a strong, consistent leader with abilities in energizing the Department, continuously seeking performance excellence while leveraging resources in a tight budget climate. The next Fire Chief will be engaged within the department but will also be visible and collaborative across City departments and the community with the goal of meeting the safety needs of the City. About the Department and Position: Reporting to the City Manager, the Fire Chief will lead the Statesville Fire Department (SFD) which consists of 83 FTE staff. There are two divisions. The Division of Fire Services includes Fire Education, Inspections, Burn Permits and Smoke Detector Replacement. The Division of Fire & and Life Safety includes Education, the Fire Marshall’s Office, Kids Programs, and other Permits (e.g. Maintenance, Life Safety Violations, Plan Review, etc.). Community outreach includes a school fire safety program that reaches over 1500 4th graders per year, a Fire Chief of the Day program, and fire fighters available to assist with selection and placement of smoke and detectors and may in some cases provide detectors and battery replacements, especially to the elderly, disabled persons or persons with other special needs. The Chief will supervise a $6.9M budget and four fire stations. The SFD responded to 4100 calls in 2019. Apparatus include 8 engines, 1 ladder truck, one HazMat turck and on Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) truck. The SFD serves the City, engages in mutual aid agreements to ensure adequate resource and response needs are met and carries an ISO rating of 2 for residential and commercial properties. The Chief is expected to be visible, trusting his/her staff to manage incidents but able to step in for critical incident command when needed. Qualifications and Pay: The City seeks a fire safety leader with a minimum of 5 years at the Battalion Chief Rank or higher and progressive fire safety experience with a minimum of 5 years of cross-functional and progressively responsible experience including fire suppression, prevention, and administrative work; a BA/BS degree required.
