The Town of Nashville is accepting applications for a Fire Engineer. This position performs responsible fire suppression and incident response activities including operating fire apparatus and participating in firefighting.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Engineer participates in the operations of fire suppression and incident response personnel and operations at the fire station. Duties include, but are not limited to: responds to alarms and participates in incidence response including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required; responds and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials, and other related incidents; responds to emergency medical incidents and provides EMT services; responds and provides technical rescue services; drives apparatus to incident scene; properly places apparatus to establish water supply or other needs; insures proper operation and pressure of hoses; issues equipment and monitors radio traffic for necessary response; returns fire apparatus and related equipment to service after incidence response; inspects station and equipment for proper appearance and condition; performs maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, station building, hydrants, hose lines and related facilities, equipment and supplies; assists with the preparation of fire reports; participates in special projects as required; participates in in-service training programs; participates in fire prevention inspections and pre-incident surveys; may perform special assignments or projects requiring the leadership or coordination of others such as SCBA maintenance and repair, radio equipment maintenance and repair, building maintenance, hydrant maintenance, hose line testing and maintenance, etc.; performs related duties as assigned.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures and principles; Considerable knowledge of the use and operation of emergency equipment and apparatus used by the Town; Considerable knowledge of incident response including response to hazardous materials spills, technical rescue and emergency medical service calls; Considerable knowledge of departmental rules and regulations; Some knowledge of the application of information technology to the work; Thorough knowledge of Town streets and layout; Ability to operate all department equipment and apparatus; Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, officials and members of the public; Ability to make sound judgements in emergency situations; Ability to prepare and maintain records of work activities.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and perform repetitive motions; Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting 100 pounds of force occasionally, and 50 pounds of force frequently and 20 pounds of force constantly to move an object; Must possess the visual acuity to size up the color, volume and extent of fire involvement at fire scenes, to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations and to prepare records and reports.
Desirable Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service; and considerable experience in a fire service; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Class B North Carolina driver’s license; Possession of NFPA Firefighter II and Driver/Operator/Pumps certification; Possession of Emergency Vehicle Driver certification; Possession of Hazardous Materials I certification; Possession of Medical Responder certification; Possession of Haz-Mat operations level certification.
Salary and Benefits
Salary Range: $34,484-51,725 annually
