    Fire Marshal

    The City of Hendersonville is seeking a Fire Marshal. An employee in this class plans, coordinates, and manages the City’s Life Safety Division including investigation and code compliance/inspection, fire prevention and staff training. Emphasis of the work is on supervising and participating in the inspections of buildings for fire hazards, promoting fire prevention/education and fire safety awareness as well as investigating fires, including those involving death, injury or having questionable nature. 

    The Hendersonville Fire Department consists of three divisions, Administration, Operations and Life Safety. The Life Safety Division is made up of a Fire Marshal, two Assistant Fire Marshals and one part-time Fire Inspector that perform over 5,000 fire inspections and coordinates and conducts over 150 hours of public education.

    The employee should possess extensive knowledge of the methods, standards, practices, strategies, techniques and tactics used in fire prevention methods, fire suppression, fire service training, fire cause determination and arson investigation; extensive knowledge of the modern investigation methods and techniques used to determine the cause of fires; comprehensive knowledge of standard fire prevention codes, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and federal, state, and departmental standards, rules and regulations and ability to enforce codes with firmness and fairness; comprehensive knowledge of techniques for handling hazardous materials; ability to effectively use computer programs, software and other office equipment necessary to perform job duties; ability to supervise and direct the work of employees; ability to lead and inspire in calm control in emergency conditions; skilled in public speaking and public relations; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to persuasively and effectively deal with property owners, managers and the general public to eliminate and prevent fire hazards and to stimulate interest and cooperation in fire prevention activities; skilled in operating emergency vehicles and in the use of firefighting equipment, fire apparatus, radios or other communications equipment. Ability to work some nights and weekends and on call requirements.

    The employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of walking, talking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions. Employee must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data; operate a computer terminal; perform extensive reading; inspect small defects or parts, operation or machines; and use measurement devices. 

    Work will be in both inside and outside environmental conditions and the employee must have the ability to work some nights, weekends and on-call requirements. 

    Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and completion of a Bachelor's degree in fire science technology or related field is required. 

    Experience: Fire Captain or Deputy Fore Marshal with a minimum of three years experience as a fire code official and a minimum of two years of supervisory experience in a municipal department. Fire Lieutenant or Assistant Fore Marshal with a minimum of five years of experience as a fire code official and a minimum of three years supervisory experience in a municipal fire department.

    Salary range: $ 54,537 - $82,991 Depending on qualifications. Applications are accepted until the position is filled.
