    Hiring Range: $50,407.50 - $61,327.50

    Candidates will need to obtain the level of certification by the Department of Insurance prior to interviewing for this position.  Contact the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Code Officials Qualification Board at 919-647-0000, to obtain the level of certification you will be eligible to receive once employed by a jurisdiction. *

    To enforce state and local fire codes, local ordinances, and general statues. This is accomplished by reviewing fire permit application submittals consisting of detailed plans, and interacting with internal customers, external customers, and design professionals; maintaining documentation; and monitoring the fire permit approval process. Other duties include fulfilling public information requests, attending project meetings, and site plan review for compliance with fire codes.

    Duties/Responsibilities
    • Prepares and maintains reports, case files, notices, correspondence, and other documentation; reviews fire plans; reviews fire permit applications and issues fire permits; and maintains databases and online systems; work involves entering, researching, compiling, and/or reviewing information, ensuring informational accuracy, and compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures. 
    • Coordinates with property owners, contractors, other City departments, and/or external agencies; attends project and other meetings; responds to complaints and inquiries in person, via phone or online systems; provides code information and interpretation; testifies in court; and provides public information on departmental operations.
    • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications & Experience
    • Associate's degree or equivalent.
    • Three or more years of full skilled crafts level experience in fire safety related work, commercial construction management, or architectural engineering drafting and design work, or any combination of training and experience which provides thorough knowledge of the Fire Code and fire/life safety related construction practices.
    • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record 
    • Knowledge of methods and techniques of code enforcement.
    • Knowledge of materials, methods and practices in various types of building construction.
    Additional requirements upon employment:
    • Ability to obtain a Fire Probationary Level III Certification at the time of hire (prefer Standard Level III Certification upon hire).
    • Position requires 6 hours of Continuing Education Units each year.
    • Must be a Sworn Official of the City-County within the first month of hire
