The Director of Fire Services and Emergency Management is responsible for developing long-range planning strategies for the fire protection delivery system within unincorporated wake county, involving contracted non-profit and municipal fire departments. The Director coordinates all activities connected with emergency management within the county, including maintaining comprehensive emergency management plans associated with natural or man-caused disasters, hazardous materials, and radiological preparedness associated with the Harris nuclear power plant.
The position reports to the County's Chief Operating Officer and is a member of the County's Senior Leadership Team. The position differs from the of a Fire Chief. The Director has responsibility for county-wide initiatives such as strategic planning, resource allocation and other management and administrative components. This position does not have the typical direct line of authority over all contracted employees and agencies such as a Fire Chief in a single agency delivery system.
