We have recently issued ballistic vests and helmets to each position on the apparatus, our safety officers, and our battalion chiefs. Our policy is written for response to active shooters as well as all violent incident response for when to wear them. We choose the NIJ IIIA as it stops all hand gun rounds but still has the capability to put plates in if needed. If you would like more information you can contact me at christopherb@cityofwsfire.org.

We issued vests to each riding position on our first out apparatus and to our Battalion Chiefs. Our personnel are instructed to wear them on any type of call in which violence has occurred or is suspected such as stabbings, gunshots or when they feel the need to have the protection.

I am interested in NC fire departments that have provided their personnel with ballistic vest protection.  I will take information on your department and or any others you know about that offer this type of protective equipment.
